Kinesis Advantage Mac: A Unique Take on Keyboard Design

As I've spent more time with the Kinesis Advantage Mac, I have to say that my initial impressions of the Cherry MX Brown switches haven't quite lived up to my expectations. While I was excited to try out this new keyboard, I'm still getting used to its unique design and features.

One of the biggest changes for me has been the lack of a space bar under my left thumb. This has caused some frustration when I quickly need to hit the space bar after clicking the mouse. However, I'm sure it's just a matter of time before I figure out a new way to adapt.

Another challenge I've faced is finding ways to handle key combinations that require the Application (menu) key or Insert key, both of which are absent from this keyboard. Additionally, some common key combinations, such as 'cd', have been a bit more difficult to type quickly due to the mechanical switch's emphasis on proper typing technique.

On the other hand, I've really grown accustomed to the small size of the keyboard and its placement has made it easy for me to get comfortable with. The backspace key being located right under my thumb has also been incredibly useful, as you might expect.

I should note that any Vim users who might be hesitant due to the small Escape key need not worry – I haven't found it to be a problem. And, in fact, I've really grown fond of having the meta keys activated by my thumbs.

One of the biggest benefits of this keyboard, in my opinion, is the placement of the cursor keys directly within the key wells. My coworkers might think I'm crazy, but I've actually been enjoying it quite a bit so far. Overall, while there have been some adjustments to make, I'm pleased with my experience using the Kinesis Advantage Mac and its unique design.
